The Giant Fir Tree

A fir tree can, under favourable conditions, grow up to 50 centimeters per year. No one knows for sure how old this giant is, but forestry experts guess at up to 140 years.

All Swedish children know the song “The Squirrel Sat in the Fir Tree” and the squirrel’s favourite thing to eat are fir tree cones. The fir tree is a very important part of the Swedish eco system; beetles, lichen and fungi are dependent on the fir tree for their survival.

Quiz question:

370 species are directly dependant on the fir tree. Of those, 114 are red listed.
